Two questions decide it. Does the lock work smoothly? And is the lock itself weak?
If the lock turns smoothly, rekeying is the cheaper answer. It changes the pins so the old keys stop working, and it keeps the body of the lock. It is the right choice after a move or a lost key.
If the lock is worn, sticks, or can be pushed open with a card, replace it. A Grade 1 deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate is the strongest standard residential choice. The strike plate and the screws into the frame matter as much as the lock, because a short screw in soft wood is the weak point most doors have.
